Flag Book Reflection
Updated: Oct 1

I would like to share one of the pages from my "Flag Book" with you.
I created this drawing based on memories of “Chuseok” from my childhood, having grown up in Korea, I spent twenty years celebrating the holiday there. Like “Thanksgiving Day” in the United States, “Chuseok” is a holiday dedicated to giving thanks for and celebrating the autumn harvest. It involves preparing delicious food to share with family and relatives and sometimes wearing traditional Korean clothing, making it quite similar to the American Thanksgiving. However, there are differences. For instance, Koreans play a traditional game called “Yunnori (traditional Korean board game)” and visit the graves of deceased family members to pay their respects.
After immigrating to the United States, I began celebrating Thanksgiving and experiencing a holiday from a different culture. At first, the food was unfamiliar to me, but now I cannot imagine Thanksgiving without turkey, gravy, and cranberry sauce. As an art educator, I look forward to the day when my students from diverse cultural backgrounds share their stories about the holidays they have experienced.
Flag Book

I decorated all the flag pages with memories of special occasions I’ve experienced: “Independence Day,” “Halloween,” “Thanksgiving,” and “Christmas.”
